Obituary

Dr. Wayne Sanford Young, of Gilroy, California, 74, died on Saturday, the 9th of January, 2016 at his home in Gilroy, CA from Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.

Wayne was born on April 30, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the oldest child of Leda and Darroll Young. He has a brother, DC, and two sisters, Amelie and Cheryl Ann. His father, Darroll, worked for the Indian Service and so they lived quite a few of his earlier years on Indian Reservations in Montana, Minnesota, Arizona, and New Mexico. Darroll then started his own machine shop with his brother and they moved to Monticello, UT.

After graduating from Monticello High School as the salutatorian and playing the "Hungarian Rhapsody" piano solo at graduation, he then served a 2 ½ year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Germany from June 1961-Dec 1963. Wayne returned from his mission to attend the University of Utah and married his wonderful wife Louise Goodworth in the Salt Lake Temple in March of 1965. Upon graduating from the University of Utah with a Bachelor's Degree in Physics and a doctorate in Ceramic Engineering/Material Science in 1969, they settled in Poughkeepsie, New York where Wayne went to work for IBM. They transferred to Gilroy, CA in September 1977 where they have resided ever since. He worked at IBM until Dec. of 2002, and then Hitachi until 2004. They had 8 children – Suzanne, Jennifer, Stephen, Rachel, Darroll, Mark, Rebecca and Deborah.

He was diagnosed with Anklosing Spondalitis in July of 1985.

In May of 2002, Wayne was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency which affected his lungs first and then his liver. In spite of his health issues, Wayne was an avid collector of stamps and fluorescent rocks. He was a very accomplished piano player and played the organ in church for many years.

Wayne's love for his family and community inspired him to serve as a member of the Gilroy School Board for 11 years, a certified Red Cross volunteer and enjoyed being a part of Gilroy Garlic Festival for many years. Wayne served in a lot of church positions over the years including Branch President, Bishop, High Councilman and Stake Patriarch. He had a gift and passion for teaching. He loved to learn and to share what he learned with others, especially what he learned about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Wayne left a lasting impression on anyone privileged enough to enjoy his classes, both the young and the young-at-heart.

Wayne is survived by his wife Louise, daughters Suzanne Aughenbaugh (Mark), Rachel Riley (David), Rebecca Amesbury (Brian) and Deborah Hart (Ben) of Utah, sons Stephen (Patti), Darroll (Shara), and Mark (Brittny) of Utah, his brother D.C. Young (Claudia), sister Amelie and over 30 adoring grandkids. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Cheryl Ann and his daughter, Jennifer.
