Obituary

Longtime Paradise resident, Virginia "Ginny" Jane Chaney died August 11 at her daughter's home in Gilroy, California at the age of 95. Virginia was born in Columbus, Ohio on April 8, 1920 and moved to Paradise in 1955. She worked for Stratton's Market in Paradise for over 20 years.

Ginny was an outstanding athlete. She was the pitcher for the Worthington High School girls' softball team that won the Franklin County Championship in Ohio in 1938. She bowled in many leagues, including Los Angeles, Paradise and Chico. In 1956, she bowled the high game of 289 for the WBL. She continued to bowl until the bowling alley in Paradise burned down, with her bowling ball and shoes inside.

Virginia was a member of Sigma Phi Gamma, helped found a new chapter of the sorority, and held all the various offices within the sorority over the years, including province offices. She was also a former member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Moose Lodge. Ginny loved to play bridge, was active in several bridge groups, and was still playing bridge until a few months ago. She taught her great-grandchildren how to play card games and they looked forward to games with Great-Grandma Chaney, especially Kings in the Corner.

Virginia was married to James E. Chaney, who passed away in 1995. She was the last surviving sibling of nine children. Her youngest sister, Nancy Boston, died on June 1st. Virginia is survived by her son, Sherman Herritt and wife, Alicia; her daughter, Mary Jane Grover and husband, Neal Grover. She has nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The family is planning a memorial party on September 5th at her daughter's home in Paradise from 11 am to 2 pm to celebrate with her friends and family the wonderful life of this amazing woman, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
