Obituary

Stuart Blumberg passed away peacefully on December 5, 2021 at the age of 91. He was born on August 29, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan, to Henrietta and Gabriel Blumberg. Stuart spent much of his early life in Syracuse, New York, where the family moved following the death of his older brother and only sibling, Wilbur, who was killed by a drunk driver while walking with friends to the library at the age of 13 in 1936 (when Stuart was 6 years old). Stuart graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature in 1952. Stuart joined the army and served for two years during peacetime in Alaska (1954-1956). Upon returning from his military service, he moved to New York City where he began working in advertising at the well-known advertising firm BBDO (Batten, Barton, Durstine, & Osborn). It was here where he met Patricia Gilman who would become his wife (they married on September 3, 1959). Stuart and Patricia lived in Brooklyn, NY, and had three children: Susan, Stephen, and David. After working for a few years at BBDO and then at J. Walter Thompson, Stuart realized he was not happy working in advertising and decided to go into teaching. He taught for a few years at Boys High School in Brooklyn. In the summer of 1967, the family moved to California, settling in Gilroy. Stuart taught English at Gilroy High School for 23 years, retiring in 1990. Some years later Pat and Stuart moved to Morgan Hill, and then later to Rossmoor, in Walnut Creek. Stuart spent his last few years in a small assisted care home in Lafayette.

Stuart was a founding member of Congregation Emeth, the South Santa Clara County Jewish Community in the Gilroy/Morgan Hill area. He was their historian for 20 years. Later he was active in Congregation Isaiah in Lafayette, where he participated in the book studies group.

Stuart was a loving and dedicated family man. He was fun and funny within the family and in social situations with friends, always a master of wordplay and non sequiturs. He was also serious and introspective, a voracious reader and lover of books, with a deep appreciation for art, music, and film. He enjoyed travel and would keep a small sketchbook of ink drawings made mostly during trips to Europe. He also wrote poetry later in life; his poems ran the gamut from humorous and quirky to deep and introspective. Stuart was a fantastic cook; he was famous for his New York-style strawberry cheesecake and he made the best omelets – thin, delicate, delicious – always cooked very slowly. He was kind and unique and is loved and deeply missed.

Stuart is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Patricia, recently relocated to Vancouver, WA; children Susan Camp (husband Matthew, Vancouver, WA); Stephen Blumberg (wife Rachel Clarke, Sacramento, CA); and David Blumberg (Oakland, CA); grandchildren Ethan Camp (wife Siloh Radovsky); Madeline (Camp) McFerran (husband Jake); Adrian Blumberg; Julian Blumberg; and great-granddaughter Artemis McFerran.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Congregation Emeth, 17835 Monterey Road, Morgan Hill, CA 95037. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Congregation Emeth.
