Ruben Gomez, retired Alameda Fire Department's Captain answered our Lord's call on 3/2/2016 this being his "Last Alarm". Born In El Paso, TX, on May 5, 1934. As a child he came to California in 1942. He was raised in Gilroy and was a 1953 graduate of Gilroy High School. Ruben served our country in the Army National Guard discharged in 1961. He worked for Babcock in Oakland prior to joining the Alameda Fire Fighters. He retired in 1991 as the Captain of his extended family the Alameda Fire Dept. I.A.F.F. Local 689. He respected and loved the men and woman he worked with and took pride in their continued friendship. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church supporting and attending events sponsored by the various clubs. Although, he had no Filipino ancestry he was elected the president of the Filipinos Seniors Club. He loved to collect trains and would visit the San Jose Flea Market to add to his collection and sell also on Ebay.
He along with two of his brothers, Mike and Richard and his Firemen buddies traveled to various states on their many hunting and fishing trips. He also was loved liked a grandfather by many young men and women, who loved to visit and hang out at his home in San Martin. To all that loved and respected him as they crossed paths on his life's journey. the Ruben Gomez family wants to thank you for being a part of his extended family.
Ruben is survived by his wife (of 62 years) Melicia Gomez; his children, Barbara (Gomez) Burrows, Ruben "Chris", David, Maria Gomez. Grandchildren : Angelica Sausen, James Burrows, Melissa Brooks, Matthew R. Gomez, David Gomez Jr., Emiliano Gomez, Elias Gomez, Matthew Gomez, Jordan Gomez, Art "Tink" Gomez, Travis Jimenez, Matthew Jimenez. He is also survived by 21 great grandchildren. Ruben was the son of the late, Romualdo and Maria de Jesus Gomez, brother of the late Fernando Gomez, Raul Gomez, Rachel (Gomez) Regalado, Roy Gomez. Survived by brothers, and sisters: Mary (Gomez) Valenzuela, Bert Gomez Sr., Margarito Gomez, Rebecca, (Gomez) Gallegos, Frances (Gomez) Chavez, Carol Gomez, Romualdo Gomez Jr., Richard Gomez, Rommie (Gomez ) Possa, Rose Gomez.
A visitation will begin Thursday March 10, 2016 1:00pm followed by a Vigil service at 7:00pm both at Habing Family Funeral Home, 129 4th Street Gilroy, CA 95020. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, March 11, 2016 10:00am at St. Mary Catholic Church , 11 First Street, Gilroy, CA 95020. Burial to follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Gilroy.
