Obituary

Robin Hammelev was born December 19, 1954 and passed away at his home, October 18, 2021, at the age of 66.

Robin was born in San Jose, CA, to Harry and Soledad (Sally) Hammelev.  His father was a Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriff.  The family moved to Morgan Hill, then Gilroy as the family continued to grow to eight children.  His siblings are Sharon, Scott, Susan, Karen, Cindy, Marcia, and Martha.  Robin was the oldest child.  As a child, Robin engaged in horsemanship with his father Harry, learning how to care for their horses.  He rode and participated in junior horseman activities.  Robin grew up attending Rucker School, Las Animas School, Brownell Junior High, Gilroy High School, and Gavilan College.  He was a star athlete in track and basketball.  He broke track high jump records and played varsity basketball beginning in his Freshman year of high school.  Robin made many lifelong friends while growing up in the Gilroy community.

In 1980, Robin continued the Hammelev legacy as he became a Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriff.  He was well respected and loved by his fellow deputies and staff members.  He was a member of the Sheriff's Honor Guard and Crowd Control Team.  He served his department and community with care, integrity and bravery.  Robin retired from the Sheriff's Office in 2012 and returned as an Extra Help Deputy in 2013.  He was still actively working as an Extra Help Deputy at his passing.  Robin Hammelev served at the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office 41 years.

In 1986, Robin married the love of his life, Mary.  Their love was evident to all who knew them.  They had two children Katherine and Michael.  Robin loved his children and was a devoted father.  He was involved in their activities and interests.  He often spoke about how proud he was of the people his daughter and son had grown up to be.  Daughter Katherine and husband Matt Gaxiola gave Robin the special gift of a grandson, Lucas, 2.  Robin loved Lucas and played with him whenever they were together.  Robin loved his family more than anything in the world.

Robin is survived by his mother Soledad(Sally), wife Mary, daughter Katherine(Matt Gaxiola), son Michael, grandson Lucas, siblings Sharon(Jake Paula), Scott, Susan, Karen(Rod Spence), Cindy(Mark Subia), Marcia(Ole Sander), Martha(Barry Smyth) and many nieces and nephews.

Robin Hammelev will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
