Robert, 83, of Gilroy, passed away in his home on Monday, August 24, 2015. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Lorraine and their six children; Terri (Kenneth) Boales, Robert (Maria Rosa) Martin, Gregory (Christi) Martin, Joni Martin, Christine (David) Keane and Timothy Martin. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, his brother, Joseph Martin, and his sister, Roseann Alexiff.
Bob was born and raised in Bingham Canyon, Utah. He was orphaned at the age of nine and sent to live and work on a farm with his grandparents, where he rode horses and pigs. At the age of 16, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War for four years on the U.S.S. Astoria. He was transferred to San Francisco. He married Lorraine Dorothy Smith when he was 20 years old. He was later honorably discharged and he and Lorraine moved back to Utah where they began raising their family.
Bob earned two Engineering degrees and moved the family back out West to San Jose after he was hired by General Electric, where he worked for 24 years. He later joined IBM in San Jose as an engineer and retired in 1992.
After retiring, he and Lorraine moved to Morgan Hill and then settled in Gilroy where he has lived for the past 21 years. He was an avid golfer and it became his passion during his retirement.
Bob was a loving, supportive husband and a proud father and grandfather. He attended as many of his grandchildren's activities and sporting events that he could. He loved nothing more than having his family around. He will be dearly missed.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, August 31, 2015, 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady's Chapel at St. Mary's Church, Gilroy. The family would appreciate donations to Hospice of the Valley.
