Obituary

Robert E Kraus, of Gilroy, CA, passed away peacefully on January 23 rd , 2022 at the age of 97 years. He is survived by son, Paul Kraus and daughters, Susan Costa and Judith Brown; sister, Ellen Hemmerich; grandchildren Laura Kraus, Stefan Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Andrew Costa, Emily Costa, and Anna Costa; and great-grandchildren Elijah Murillo, Sari Urban and Cooper Brown. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marianna Fuller Kraus and brother Marvin E Kraus.

Robert was born in Darke Co, Ohio in 1924 to Francis L Kraus and Ruth (Young) Kraus. He grew up on a farm in Miami Co, Ohio and entered college in 1942 at Ohio State University. He was drafted into the Army soon after and served at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii as a radar repairman. On his return to Ohio, he met his future wife, Marianna, and completed his degrees in Chemical Engineering. Bob and Marianna were married in 1949 and made their first home in West Milton, Ohio. Bob worked for a division of General Motors in Ohio and the family lived in Dayton and Warren, Ohio when the children were young. In 1967 Bob took a job with the Raychem Corporation which caused the family to relocate first to Michigan and then in 1969 to Palo Alto, CA where Bob and Marianna resided until 2014.

Bob was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Palo Alto singing in the church choir, serving on the Church Council, and volunteering for community outreach programs over the years. Some of his favorite memories during this time were of the trips he and Marianna took to Europe, related to his work for Raychem, where they were able to explore many different countries and experience their cultures. He also spent many hours every week working in his garden, one of his favorite hobbies. As an avid reader of history, biography, theology and science he was a fan of Jeopardy! and amazed his children and grandchildren at how often he could beat the contestants with the right answers.

Bob and Marianna moved to Gilroy in 2014 to Merrill Gardens and became members at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Although he was not as active as in his younger days, he still enjoyed being with his family, playing trivia games at Merrill Gardens, singing, and attending church every Sunday. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
