Obituary

Robert Paul Alvey "Bob", beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and father-in-law, passed away peacefully at home in Gilroy, California on January 4 th , 2019.

Bob was born on his family's farm March 12 th , 1932 to Lucy Boswell Alvey and Paul Alvey in Calipatria, California. He was their youngest child.

Preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Vivian, Gayle, Kenneth and Mary Jane (Betty), and his daughter Lu-Ann Alvey Davis.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia (Colburn) Alvey, his sister Lela Savage his daughters Jean Viarengo and Beth Alvey, his son's-in-law Alan Viarengo and Michael Davis, grandchildren Alberto Viarengo, Nicholas Davis, Aidan Viarengo and Lindsay Davis and his nephews and nieces Cliff, Lonnie, Tom, Steve, Paula, Mary and Tim and their families.

He graduated Calipatria Union High School in 1950 and spent 2 years at Chaffee College before his acceptance into the Naval Flight Academy in Pensacola, Florida in 1952. He served on the USS Wasp on its last world tour. After his service, he attended UC Davis graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Agronomy in 1958.

In 1963 he married Patricia Colburn in Willcox Arizona where their first Daughter, LuAnn, was born.

They moved to Tacna Arizona and he managed a 4000 acre citrus ranch in the Mojave desert where their second and third daughters (Jean and Beth) were born.

In 1970 they moved to Blythe, California when Bob went to work for McCormick Spices/Gilroy Foods as "Desert Field Man."

In 1976, McCormick offered Bob the position of Agricultural Research and Development Manager for Gilroy Foods Inc. in Gilroy California where he finally settled with his family. He took great pride in his work, traveling several times to Egypt and Morocco for research. He was modest, self-effacing, hard-working and tireless, never boastful about his accomplishments.

His only greater pride was his family and his ability to provide for them.

After retiring in 1996, he loved to work in his garden, travel, assist Pat with the care of his mother-in-law and participate in his church community at Saint Luke's, Hollister.

His deepest joy came from watching his children and grandchildren grow and telling his wife, several times daily, how much he loved her. Although Alzheimer's disease took most of his memories and strength he continued to enjoy the love for his family up to his very last day.
