Obituary

Our beloved father, grandfather, big brother, uncle, mentor and friend, Richard Waldemar Johnson, died peacefully at his Morgan Hill residence on May 15, 2015, at age 91. Dick was born July 1, 1923, the eldest of five siblings, to John Waldemar Johnson and Anna Margareta Rosen Johnson in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints his entire life. Dick attended Salt Lake City schools, graduating from South High School at age 16, followed by studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Utah. Upon graduating at age 20, Dick joined the Navy as an officer, being assigned to attend Harvard University to study Pre-Radar followed by Radar studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His Radar education was completed at Bell Labs and AT&T in New York City prior to being assigned as Radar Materiel Officer on the USS Wisconsin -- one of the four Iowa class battleships that fought valiantly in World War II. As the war ended, Dick still had one more year to serve. On the USS Wisconsin he traveled to Pearl Harbor, San Francisco, Long Beach, Panama Canal, Norfolk, Virginia, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Eventually they sailed back to the mainland where Dick received an Honorable Release from the Navy to inactive duty.

As a civilian, Dick worked in Colorado, where he met and married Joy Clark. Their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple and their family began with Carol and Bob. Dick received his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado. Teaching in the Engineering Dept. at the Univ. of Utah, he sought to further his career, moving to the Los Angeles, CA, area where Dick worked at Hughes Aircraft for the next many decades. Dick and Joy raised their five children who attended California schools prior to BYU and Bob's LDS Mission to Korea.

Dick and Joy were deeply involved in LDS church activities, serving in numerous teaching and leadership positions. They served years on the LAX Food Pantry Board of Directors -- An Interfaith Ministry. Dick arranged for Church Welfare Services and Los Angeles Bishops Storehouse & Cannery to regularly contribute to Food Pantry in serving the needy. Dick also spearheaded vacation trips all over the world with his friends and family. Dick and Joy loved to travel.

Dick is survived by his five children: Carol (Allan) Hymas, Grand Junction, CO; Robert Clark (Maxine) Johnson, Suisun City, CA; Barbara (Allan) Kogan, Dallas, TX; Janet (Dan) Hill, Omaha, NE; Diane (John) Goodman, Los Angeles, CA; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.
