Richard H.
Gomer
September 3, 1928 – June 13, 2023
Richard H. Gomer (Dick) was the first born child to Henry & Marguerite Gomer. Born in Frederick, Colorado in 1928. His family later moved to Globeville, a German community in Denver Colorado. He had four brothers and four sisters.
He attended North High in Denver where he wrestled and won city & state championships. After graduation, Richard joined the Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA. He returned to Denver after his discharge to attend Denver University.
After two years, the Korean War broke out and Richard was called back to duty as a 21-year old infantry sergeant and squad leader in the 1st Marine Division, H/3/7. He was involved in many battles, earning two purple hearts.
Richard & Virginia married in 1956. They had three children, Richard (Rick), Craig, and Kristy. They welcomed two granddaughters, seven grandsons and two great- granddaughters. Also leaving behind four sisters and two brothers, his sister & brother-in-law, Gwen & Bob Domenico with whom many wonderful times were shared.
After moving to Gilroy in 1966, where they developed lifelong friends in Westwood and later on when they moved to the Burchell Road community in 1974. They built the house they still live in after 50 years. They loved their neighbors who have been so helpful over the years.
Richard started in the vegetable seed business in Denver and was in agriculture for the rest of his life. He was active in California & ASTA Seed Association. Coming to California in 1966 to work for Pieters Wheeler Seed Co. And became the Pres. of Ca. Seed Assn. in 1974. In 1980 he started his own company called Global Seeds. He loved the business and traveled the world calling on customers. His son Craig took over the business when he retired.
Richard was active in the community over the years and still belonged to the Gilroy Elks and the VFW at the age of 94.
Richard was a good natured, easy going and strong. He was a man who loved his family above all. Close behind came The Marine Corps, 49ers, and Giants.
Richard went on an Honor Flight with 24 other veterans of WWII, Korean War, and other conflicts to Washington D.C.
Richard was an avid home gardener and was especially proud of his great tomatoes. He will be tending a garden in a beautiful place from now on.
