Richard M. Esparza, Jr., age 76, a decorated Vietnam War Veteran and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness on April 4, 2025.
Born in Gilroy, California, Richard dedicated his life to service, both to his country and to his family. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned numerous commendations for his bravery, dedication, and leadership. His military service was marked by honor, courage, and an unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers and his nation.
After returning home, Richard continued to live a life defined by love and integrity. He married the love of his life, Stella, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. Together, they built a family grounded in faith, resilience, and deep affection.
He is survived by his wife, Stella Ceballos, his children, Christine Arrocena (Moises), Suzanne Esparza, and Richard Esparza (April), his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life and carry forward his legacy of strength and compassion.
Richard will be remembered not only for his heroic service, but also for his warm heart, and the steady, quiet strength that made him a pillar of his family and community. He had a love for fishing, RVing, and gardening and found peace in the simple pleasures of life, especially time spent with loved ones.
Family and friends are invited to a Vigil Service on Sunday, April 13 at 7 PM at Habing Family Funeral Home located at 129 4th St, Gilroy CA. A funeral service honoring Richard's life will be held on April 14 at 10 AM, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gilroy, followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery. He will be laid to rest with full military honors.
