Phillip Edward Vargas of Gilroy, CA passed away on Sept 30 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Phil was born in San Jose, California, graduated from Westmont High School in San Jose and earned a degree in music and teaching credential from San Jose State University. Phil enjoyed a 30 year career as a guitar instructor at Mission College, and retired in 2005 after a 25 year career with American Airlines. In his youth, Phil was a track stand-out, and became an avid gardener and beekeeper.
Phil is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Hoffmann, devoted step-children Brooke Leslie of Gilroy and Anna Hoffmann of San Francisco, and grandchildren Juliana, Kaia, and Mackenzie. He is also survived by mother Margaret Vargas of Saratoga, sisters, Carol Hecker and Mary Lou Bales, brothers Richard Vargas and Jeffrey Vargas of San Jose, and Alfred Vargas of Eugene, OR; and mother-in-law Ellen Heisey of San Jose. He was proceed in death by his father, Alfred Vargas, and brother Michael Vargas, of Saratoga, and father-in-law, Dean Heisey of San Jose. Phil's passionate and caring spirit will be missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held for family and friends on Oct 30 in Gilroy, CA. Private burial service will take place on Oct 29 in Santa Cruz, CA . Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Cancer Society.
