Born in Terre Haute, Indiana on Christmas Eve, Pat was the second of Vergil and Mary Jean Magill’s six children. As was typical in those times, Pat and his older brother worked alongside their dad on the family’s farm south of Marshall, Illinois. With that responsibility also came the freedom to roam the woods along the Wabash River. Pat’s love for trees, plants and nature was formed during these years.
In 1961, the family moved west to California settling in the East Bay. A 1968 graduate of Newark High School, Pat’s world view was heavily influenced by that turbulent era. He remained politically astute, informed and skeptical throughout his life.
A longtime employee of the city of San Jose, Pat was a proud public servant, retiring as a Senior Construction Inspector in the Public Works Department. No park, median island, downtown palm tree or public art project was without a story told in great detail and humor.
Above all else, Pat was a family man. He was loving, dependable, supportive, sometimes ridiculous and always hilarious. A teacher of many lessons from the proper way to wash a car, catch a ball, use a tool, mow a lawn, pick a lemon, grill a tri-tip, achieve a goal and treat others with kindness.
He was a gear-head, loved sports, all genres of music, Original Joe’s restaurant and the view from Magill Hill.
He is survived by his wife Mala; daughters Melanie and Erin; sons-in-law Tim and Tui; grandsons Nicholas and Patrick; five siblings and his many nieces and nephews.
