We are profoundly saddened to share the passing of Moses Ibarra, 81, of Isleton, CA, on March 28, 2025, in Gilroy, CA. Moses was born on October 12, 1943, in San Jose and was the son of the late John and Jessie Ibarra. Moses was raised in San Jose's north side where the family farm was located, attended school in Santa Clara, and was a 1961 graduate of Santa Clara High School.
After graduation, Moses attended community college until he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years stationed in Vietnam, serving with the 9th Infantry Division, known as the "Old Reliables."
After completion of military service, Moses returned to college and completed both his bachelor of science and master's degrees from California State University Fresno in Agricultural Science. He also received a Teaching Credential from National University. Moses was a lifelong farmer working alongside his father, who founded J and M Ibarra Farms in San Jose, Gilroy, and later Reedley and Isleton. Moses farmed for forty-five years. During this time, he also developed a love of teaching mathematics and coaching track and field in Orosi, Reedley and Gilroy schools. After school, Moses could be found "tutoring" his own children, nieces, and nephews, and neighborhood children on their homework assignments, encouraging them to do well in school.
Moses was most recently recognized by the Western Regional Vietnam Memorial Wall in Dinuba, CA, as instrumental in the commencement and breaking ground of the Vietnam Wall Project and serving as the nonprofit's Past President. During his military service, he established lifelong friendships that continued to this day.
Moses was a kind, generous, and unassuming man who had a natural curiosity for fixing "old things" that were mechanical, electrical, or automotive. Living in Isleton allowed him to still farm and relax, enjoying boating and fishing in the riverfront area. He loved using his math skills on Sudoku and watching Jeopardy in the evenings. His children still chuckle over his old, heavy math book that he always carried and had with him.
Moses was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Cruz Ibarra, of forty years, and his sister, Margarita Ibarra. He was a loving father to his sons and daughter, Manuel Ibarra (Maricar), Carlos Ibarra (Analyn Rosario) of Gilroy, and Sharon Hernandez (Timothy), of Japan. Moses was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Samuel Ibarra, Keira, and Liam Hernandez, Acesin Charles and Ayla Rose Ibarra. Moses is also survived by his brother, John Ibarra (Marcie) of Sacramento, and sister, Rachel Perez (John) of Gilroy, CA. and his aunt, Vee Guevara of San Jose and uncle, Ishmael Esparza of Texas. He leaves behind many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nephews, nieces, and lifelong friends.
