IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael Samuel
Duran, Jr.
July 5, 2001 – May 29, 2020
It is with great sadness and sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved son Michael Duran Jr. Michael was born 18 years ago in the early morning hours of July 5, 2001 to fireworks and the beat of ceremonial songs. He met his ancestors on May 29, 2020.
Michael was a proud graduate of Central High School in Morgan Hill, CA and worked fulltime at the Indian Heath Center as a Job Coach teaching teens and young adults how to prepare for the workforce.
In a time of confusion, chaos, and uncertainty, Michael was known to have had clarity, certainty, and hope for the future. He walked the red road, leaving every one and everything he encountered better than before. He was laid back, but always lifted your spirits. He had a magical power that was palpable with his infectious smile that got bigger and brighter when he saw and greeted you. Everyone loved him from the moment they met him. He was humble, funny, bright, and curious. Even if he thought you were blowing smoke, he listened intently giving you his full attention and the benefit of the doubt until he could figure it out for himself.
He was surrounded by love and encouragement in both his family and community. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 3.6 years of age, he showed many how to turn misfortune into strength. It was never a surprise to see the wonderful man that he manifested into.
Michael was proud of his Apache heritage and raised in ceremony. He embraced his indigenous culture in a way that promised continuity and strength for generations to come. At such a young age, he left a rich legacy that has inspired all those who knew him. Please offer a prayer with tobacco, sage, or good thoughts, in whatever tradition you practice.
The family would like to thank everyone for your tremendous support during this time of sorrow.
