Maria Guadalupe Melgoza Gil was born in Aguililla, Michoacán to Ramon Melgoza and Sabina Melgoza Bonilla on June 22, 1935. Maria Guadalupe was known to everyone as Lupe. She grew up in a small family and married at a young age to Francisco Gil.
Lupe immigrated to the United States on April 1, 1963 with her husband and seven children. They arrived in Redwood City, California and soon moved to East Palo Alto, where Lupe and her family worked in the Tanaka Nursery on Green Street. Lupe and Francisco had a total of nine children, six girls and three boys. Seven of their children were born in México and the youngest two were born in the United States.
Lupe then moved to Gilroy, Los Baños and settled back in Gilroy where she lived from the year 2000 until her passing. Lupe went on to have two daughter in-laws, and four son-in-laws, along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Her grandchildren affectionately referred to Lupe as Abuelita Lupe or Mami Lupe. She prided herself on her beautiful family and enjoyed her home garden, full of flowers and fruits. She was also known for her great cooking, having made various home cooked meals throughout the years. She loved her family gatherings and celebrating the holidays. Lupe passed away on February 27, 2026.
Lupe is survived by her husband, Francisco Gil, her six daughters, three sons, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A memorial and rosary service will be held at Habings Funeral Home in Gilroy on Sunday, March 15th, followed by a mass at St. Mary’s Church in Gilroy and burial at Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park in San Jose on Monday, March 16th.
