Obituary

Leonard Shigeru Tanaka, 88, died at his home on October 30, 2021. He was born December 8, 1932, in Monterey California, the son of Ryuzo and Yoneko Tanaka. During World War II, the Tanaka family was interned at the Amache Relocation Camp in Colorado. At the conclusion of the war, they returned to Monterey and moved to Gilroy a short time later.

Leonard graduated from Gilroy High School. Following graduation, he attended San Jose State University and graduated with his B.A. degree in Accounting in 1955. He served in the US Navy before working at the IRS for several years before deciding to go into the private sector. He worked for, then later owned Acme Income Tax Service. He also worked for the City of San Jose for 15 years.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two of his brothers, Masaji Tanaka and Herbert Tanaka.

Leonard leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Akiko; his children, Evelyn (Iain) Simpson and Brian Tanaka, and granddaughter, Alera Simpson. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Ann Tanaka; three brothers Norman (Alice) Tanaka, Arthur (Mihoko) Tanaka, Roy (Donna) Oku; sister in-law, Shizuko Tanaka; cousins, Yumiko (Yasuo) Sakaguchi, Fumiyo (Virgil) Katsuyama and Sachiko (Bob) Uyematsu and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Sunday, November 21st at the San Jose Buddhist Temple, 640 N 5 th Street, San Jose, CA. Only the first 100 family members and friends can be admitted due to COVID restrictions. Burial will be done privately with only family at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park in Gilroy, the following day.
