Extended family & friends will be notified with an address, when everything is set in place. (A date is not set at this time, and may not take place till the Summer of 2023.) A memory card will be sent out to all family members & dear friends as well as a visual story of his life, shortly.
Joseph Vogel suddenly slipped away from consciousness while tending duties to his land. He later passed away in the early hours of June 27, 2022 at the age of 94.
Joe was best known as a goal driven, hard pushing, 'get it right the first time' perfectionist. His style was much like John Wayne. Observant, focused upon the practical overview and then executed a plan with full intention to see it accomplished.
He loved the old Westerns on television. And would watch them diligently night after night, even if he has seen them already, time and time again.
Our father was best known in the valley as one of `the Vogel brothers' that everybody seemingly knew. He was a finish carpenter in Watsonville, Salinas and Gilroy. He also constructed various buildings that still stand to this day, in our lil town of Gilroy.
Dad had a natural competitive edge and focus, as an athlete, a team player with dear friends and later family members, whom remained in his life to this day. After graduation, he was drafted during the Korean War into the Army and was to gain a promised scholarship for sports. He received an Honorable Discharge in rank as a E-6, Staff Sgt.
He spent his entire life chasing 1st pIace ranking within any competitive sport, club or team activity. He would use skillful logic and a designed strategy as he went all out to challenge himself to gain what he sought for. Trap shooting, a 'Hall of Fame' bowler, 'All Star Athlete' & later an lnductee `Hall of Fame' for Gilroy High School wall in his 70's with a fellow close friend from GHS. He loved to play baseball, football, basketball, as well as field & track. An `All Star Athlete,' he was.
I think what everybody saw from him was that he contained a 'stern-fiery passion' within his soul. That very mindset~ is what he expected others to bring themselves to do just like he did to Everything!
Dad also flew Homing Pigeons for nearly 35 yrs., taking 1st place in every race. Everybody wanted to learn his style, as well as to gain the secrets he used in the sport. He had a continuous `edge' to maintain his titles, naturally for decades.
He fancied nice classic cars, hot rods and belonged to the Horseless Carriage club of Salinas in the 70's & 80's. He was an avid hunter and fisherman of the great outdoors and loved to shoot clay pigeons, after an exclamation of, "Pull!" Dads 1932 Ford coup 'Rat Rod also made it to the cover of Hot Rod magazine in the early years of the 50's, after he sold it.
And if this wasn't enough, dad was always spotted on his tractor tending his hay fields, & various orchards of fruits and nuts. He used an ol wooden antique seeding wagon from the depression era to seed the fields for hay. He simply loved having his personal playground of activities upon his estate. We will forever hear him whistle~ as his land leaves his spirit upon it
