Joaquin Covarrubias passed on Sunday, May 6 ^th 2018 at the age of 76 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Maria Paz Covarrubias, their 9 children, 19 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 8 siblings. In passing, he joins his father Juan Covarrubias, mother Genoveva Covarrubias and brother Santiago Covarrubias.

Born in Los Amoles, Mexico, Joaquin migrated to the United States with his wife and children in 1972 to seek life-saving medical treatment for his son and create a better life for his family. In Gilroy, he worked tirelessly as a fieldworker and notably marched with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers to fight for the rights of fieldworkers throughout California. He retired at age 67 after working for Monterey Mushrooms for 40 years.

Joaquin lived to enjoy life. He will be remembered warmly for his heartwarming demeanor, incomparable humor and enduring commitment to the well being of his family. He loved fishing with his compadres, hosting family barbeques in his backyard, taking care of his truck, and trying his luck at the casino. Joaquin's greatest happiness was hearing the laughter of his children and grandchildren.

Viewing and Vigil Service will be held at Habing Family Funeral home in Gilroy on Thursday, May 10th at 2:00pm and 5:30pm respectively. Funeral Mass will proceed at Saint Mary's Catholic Church on Friday, May 11 ^th at 1:00pm.
