IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jeanette
Comstock
February 9, 1931 – June 27, 2021
Surrounded by her family, Jeanette "Jay" Comstock – loving mother, "J Gramma," aunt, and friend – died peacefully June 27, 2021, in Watsonville, California. She was 90 years old.
The second of three daughters, Jay was born on Feb. 9, 1931, to Roxie and Lazarus Kandarian. She was born in the family home at 10261 S. Fowler Avenue in Fowler, California, where her father farmed raisin grapes on 33 acres.
Jay grew up in the close-knit Armenian community that had settled in the Fresno area in the decades following the Armenian genocide. She attended local schools, graduating from Fowler High School in 1948. She left home to attend San Jose Bible College in San Jose, California, where she made lifelong friends.
It was also there, in 1949, that she met Glen Comstock. He was smitten and, with some persistent courting, she was too. They were married in Fresno on July 21, 1951, and enjoyed 68 years of marriage until Glen's death on January 25, 2020.
Jay and Glen had four children: Ron, Lauren, Brian, and Diane. They lived in San Jose most of their lives, with Jay managing home and family life. She was a support to Glen, who owned and operated his own business much of his career. She was active in her neighborhood and always ready to welcome people for drop-in visits, whether for a leisurely cup of coffee or an extended stay brought on by a crisis. She volunteered at her children's schools and in her church. She was warm, hospitable, funny, and brought considerable gifts and talents to everything she did.
She was an expert seamstress, having watched and learned from her mother and aunt at the Roxie-Rose Dress Shop they owned and operated in Fowler. She made clothes for herself and her daughters and costumed many church and school plays, particularly sinking her teeth into the detailed period-piece costumes that sent her to encyclopedias to research the fashion of the day. She would then sketch the costume, create a pattern, and successfully transform an awkward high school girl into a queen, or in one case, her daughter into Lt. Uhura for a Star Trek play. When Glen opened his own home improvement business, she was the one who made any "fancy work" orders, and her kids got used to having swags and cascades covering the furniture in the living room when the orders came in. She also made several wedding and bridesmaid dresses over the years, including her own wedding dress.
Jay demonstrated an innate sense of style in everything she put her hand to, whether it was decorating the family home, helping with church remodeling projects, or decorating the church for Christmas. Where others saw what was, she saw what could be and seamlessly turned her vision into a reality, often working on shoestring budgets, using whatever materials were on hand.
She was a gifted singer with a beautiful soprano voice. She sang in a trio during her college days, was a longtime church choir member and soloist, often sang duets in church with Glen, and many families found comfort in her singing at the funerals of their loved ones.
Vibrant Christian faith was a defining quality in Jay. She loved the Lord, was a student of the Bible, and, along with Glen, faithfully supported many missionaries over the years. She was particularly interested in evangelization among the Turkish people, for whom she carried a unique burden. She accepted the challenges of life with grace, always confident God would see her through, and shrugging off financial reversals as if they were of no consequence. She didn't see the glass as half-empty or half-full; she knew God owned the well and that he'd fill her cup.
Even as she journeyed through the last several years of her life with Alzheimer's, she had a sweet spirit and a ready smile, making the residents and staff laugh with her quick wit, lending a hand to help, and encouraging others when she could.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her beloved sisters, Lazetta Korpela and Bonnie Webber. She is survived by her son Ronald (Joyce) Comstock of Gilroy, CA; daughter Lauren (Dan) Wilkins of Watsonville, CA; son Brian (Sharon) Comstock, of San Jose, CA; and daughter Diane Comstock of Morgan Hill, CA, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Jay's family wishes to thank the compassionate staff at De Un Amor Assisted Living in Watsonville for their loving care of "Lady Jay."
