Obituary

James (Jim) Frederick Quinn, treasured husband, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle passed away peacefully at home on December 13 th following a brief illness.

Jim was born on May 17, 1924 in New York City and was the first child of James and Margaret (Deasy) Quinn.  He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Margaret (Quinn) Donnelly, brother-in-law, John Donnelly and by his daughter-in-law Victoria (Stevens) Quinn.  Jim lost his loving wife Eileen this past March after celebrating their 70 th wedding anniversary in December 2017.  Jim is survived by his children, Retired Colonel James Quinn of Springfield, VA, Patricia (Joseph) Valenzano of Gilroy, CA and Brian (Hisae) Quinn of Fukuoka, Japan.  Jim has seven grandchildren, Michael (Christal) Valenzano of Washington, DC, Carl (Alicia) Valenzano of Mableton, GA, Kathryn (Lieutenant Colonel Gabriel) Fernandez of Washington, DC, David Valenzano of Texas, Shoji Quinn of Fukuoka, Japan, Koji Quinn of Tokyo, Japan and Clare Quinn of Tokyo, Japan.  He also has four great-grandchildren, Alexander and Lucy Valenzano, of Mableton, GA and Joseph and Nora Valenzano of Washington, DC.  In addition, Jim is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was raised in the Bronx where he enjoyed city living and going to his favorite sport event…baseball games with his father and uncles.  He would often talk about the "greats" of baseball that he was privileged to have seen play in NYC.  Jim's favorite team was the New York Giants and his favorite player was Willie Mays.  He remained loyal to the Giants even after they moved to San Francisco.  Jim graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1940 and started college. School was interrupted by World War II.  Jim signed up for the US Army and was in the 114 th Engineer Combat Division stationed in the Philippines where he attained the rank of Sergeant.  Following his discharge from the Army in 1946, Jim returned to college at New York University majoring in civil/structural engineering.  Jim met his wife, Eileen, at a Christmas party in the Chrysler Building in Manhattan, where he was working, in December 1946 and they were married a year later on December 27, 1947.  In 1955 a job opportunity for Jim at Bell Aerosystems moved them to western New York where they would remain until 2015.  Jim was a devoted husband, father and Republican!  He was active in local and state politics and was the head of the Niagara County Republican party for several years.  Jim was often asked to run for office but he would decline because he would "tell it like it was" and many people did not want to hear that.  Jim retired at the age of 62 to enjoy life, his family and have more time to play golf.

After retirement, Jim and Eileen enjoyed many years of travel and visited several countries in Europe (including three trips to Ireland) and Asia, to visit their son Brian and his family.  They also went on numerous cruises.  Jim's favorite cruise was the one that took them through the Panama Canal.  They were also the typical "snow birds" and spent the winter months at a condo in Fort Myers Beach, FL for many years.  As the years went by, Jim and Eileen made the decision to move to Gilroy, CA in 2015 to be closer to their daughter.

Following Jim's wishes, there will be no local services but the family will have graveside services for both Jim and Eileen later in 2019 in their beloved State of New York.
