Obituary

Harry Angelo Giretti Jr., born July 22, 1936 to Harry Giretti Sr. and Linda Ciabattari Giretti passed away in Gilroy at age 86 on October 14, 2022. He spent his youth in the vineyards and prune orchards on Burchell Road, Monterey Road, and Mesa Road with his grandfathers Americo Ciabattari, Serafino Giretti, and father Harry Sr. His love and passion for farming carried on throughout his lifetime. He began by leasing land and tending to other farmers' orchards until he purchased his own orchard, a prune orchard, on Hecker Pass Hwy in 1961 from Mrs. W. Milne.

To provide for his growing family, Harry started working for Santa Clara County Parks Department at Mount Madonna Park in 1961. During his career with the county, he moved to higher positions at Anderson Lake, Coyote Lake and then as Park Manager.

As he continued working with the county, Harry took care of his prune orchard, along with leasing property to grow cucumbers, blue lake beans, alfalfa, marigolds, and sugar beets. In 1975, having grown his first crop of sugar beets, he won an award for cultivating 19,629 pounds of sugar per acre on 9.2 acres of property on Scenic Hecker Pass Hwy. In 1996 he retired from the County Parks with 34 years of service.

After retirement, Harry removed the old prune orchard and planted Chandler walnuts. In addition to harvesting his walnuts, his dream was to process them as well. He then purchased a huller and dryer and built an addition to the barn to house the necessary equipment to do so.  He continued processing his own walnuts until 2017.

Harry treasured time with family and friends, dancing, discussing history, passing down his Italian culture by celebrating Bagna Càuda (a traditional yearly Piemontese dish meaning "hot bath"), making homemade raviolis for Christmas, and by proudly being  part of the F.B.I. (Full Blooded Italians) club.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Linda Giretti, his ex-wife Judy Lee Giretti and brother-in-law Robert Dennis. Harry is survived by his companion of 23 years Kristine Dillon, daughters Tammy Minolli and Hydie McDonald (Steve), grandchildren Matthew Minolli (Alex), Terra Minolli (Bruce), Jacob and Londa McDonald, great grandchildren Olive and Elias Minolli, and sisters Diane Robinson (Winn) and Karen Dennis.

Donations in Harry's memory should be directed to a charity of your choice.

Burial will be private (family only) followed by a celebration of life for family and friends on Friday, October 28th at 12:30pm at Old City Hall Restaurant, 7400 Monterey Street, Gilroy.
