Obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Mann, a retired industrial machine shop owner, died on Sunday, October 3, of complications associated with Parkinson's disease. He died at home, in Morgan Hill, with Wendy, his wife of 27 years, at his bedside.

Born September 13, 1937, to Barbara Jean and Frank Mann, in San Francisco, Jerry grew up in the Bay Area, living for times as far away as Auburn, and eventually settling in the San Jose area as a young adult. He  graduated from Willow Glen High School in San Jose in 1955. In 1964, Jerry and a partner purchased BBC, Inc, a specialized industrial machine shop, which he co-owned and operated for 50 years, until the business was sold in 2019. His curiosity about how things work, and his love of building, permeated all parts of his life, including the designing and building of the home in which he and Wendy resided until 2014.  Jerry also built and restored several vintage hot rods and planted and harvested vineyards at both of his last two residences, ultimately producing a Pinot Noir that he named Jerry's Jam.

His gardening interests weren't limited to viticulture, however. He and his dear friend, Ramon Berrara, spent almost every weekend not just in the vineyards, but tending fruit trees and his increasingly more extensive ornamental garden of trees, shrubs and flowers.

An active outdoorsman, Jerry hunted deer, elk, turkey and duck, both in California and during yearly treks to Colorado, always accompanied by close friends or family. He was also an avid fisherman, who, although did not have a taste for fish so never ate anything he caught, delighted friends, family and neighbors with his catch.

His motor pool of cars, trucks, hot rods, ATVs and boats was augmented for many years by yet another of his passions: motorcycles. Jerry spent many years off-road biking in Baja, California, with a group of fellow motorcycle enthusiasts (many stories could be told…)

He is survived by his wife, Wendy Mann; his brother, Robert Mann (Thanh), of Sacramento, CA; his sons, Bryon Mann and Steven (Debra) Mann, both of San Jose, CA; and his step-children, Shae Fogg, of Morgan Hill, CA, Robert Fogg, of Gardnerville, NV and Jeffrey Fogg, of Grass Valley, CA; and five grandchildren, Kiandra Kanavel (Charlie), Mikaela Kirkman, Lorraine Mann, Emma Mann and Daniel Fogg. He will also be missed by his nieces, Julie Mann, Kimberly Mann and nephew Robert Mann, Jr. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 23, at 1 pm at the Mann residence at 15905 Foothill Avenue, Morgan Hill.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, an organization that Jerry was passionate about, or to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
