January 25, 1940 – November 13, 2017
Fred Phillips, age 77, passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully at his home in Gilroy on November 13, 2017. Beloved by all who knew him, he is survived by his wife Sally-Ann, his daughter Valerie (Jonathan) and 5 little girl dogs that considered him to be their "Father Dawg." He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Phillips, Lois Tanner, and his brother Anthony Taylor (Corinne).
Born in Los Angeles, Fred grew up in Pacific Grove. He graduated from Pacific Grove High School and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1958. After completion of his military service, Fred
obtained an Associate of Arts degree and embarked upon a career in law enforcement. The agencies he served include: Yellowstone County, MT (Deputy Sheriff), Los Angeles County, CA (Deputy Sheriff), and the City of Seaside, CA (Police Department). Fred began his career with the Seaside Police Department as an officer in 1988; he retired as Interim Chief of Police in 2001.
The family wishes to express appreciation to the responding Gilroy Police Officers and Paramedics for their heroic assistance delivered with compassion, kindness and respect.
Deep gratitude and love are extended to our City of Seaside law enforcement family as well as our beloved family of friends and co-workers of the Monterey County Department of Social Services. Thank you all for being a constant source of strength, comfort, and love.
Military graveside services will be held 11:00am, Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Central Coast Veterans Cemetery, 2900 Parker Flats Road, Seaside, CA 93955.
