IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evelyn Linda
Vassale
March 5, 1936 – January 11, 2021
Evelyn was born to Louis and Maria Bas on March 5, 1936 in Brooklyn New York. She was the younger sister of Louis Jr. and older sister to Ada. Evelyn attended elementary school in New York and completed her secondary education in Puerto Rico, the birthplace of both of her parents. She told stories of her time on the island, as this is where she developed a fondness for spending time at the beach.
As a young adult she worked in the insurance industry in New York City before making her move west to California. It was while she was working in New York that she established her life-long friendship with Edward Barry. She treasured this friendship her entire life.
Evelyn married Ralph Caro and they had two children together, Steven and Camille. She was fortunate to find love again when she married for a second time to Joseph. They welcomed Suzy into the family and she and Joe raised the three children together. They moved the family from the Los Angeles area to Gilroy in 1979.
In 1993 Joe and Evelyn made the decision to move back east to Orlando, Florida. They spent 25 years in Florida and made dear friends with many on Weschler Circle. Both were employed at Walt Disney World, Joe for 23 years and Evelyn for five. She later joined the Cashiering Team at Publix Grocery Southchase, a job she genuinely enjoyed. They moved back to Gilroy in the spring of 2018 and came to live with daughter Camille and her family.
Evelyn had a great sense of humor and was known for her quick wit. Law and Order marathons, Judge Judy and the Family Feud were just a few of her favorite television shows. She loved to read and encouraged her children and grandchildren to do the same. Evelyn also enjoyed reading bible scripture and always had prayer books on hand, next to her bedside.
Evelyn was a great listener and was known to give good counsel to her children and grandchildren.
Evelyn is mother to son Steven, daughter Camille and son-in-law Larry, and daughter Suzy.
She is known affectionately as Nana to Caitlyn, Carissa, Rebeca, Rachel, Larry Jr., Rhiannon, Chloe, Tyler, Tealyn, Tatiana, Joshua and Jonathan; and Great-Nana to Audrey Brooklyn Marie and Graham Walker.
She loved her family very much and it brought her much joy to be known as Auntin', Aunt Evelyn and Aunt Lyn to her many nieces and nephews. Her heart was also full of love for her childhood friend and sister-in-law Dora Bas.
During her time here on earth, Evelyn also had the opportunity to share her love and friendship with Matt, Troy and Chelle. She was always grateful for the good times she shared with each.
She enjoyed the talks she had with Kelly, always asking how she and her mother were doing. She and Joe both really enjoyed when the Brinson family came to visit, bringing big smiles, laughter, and joy.
Evelyn leaves behind her beloved husband Joseph. They would have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary June 19th. He took such good care of her for many years and loved her tremendously. He made sure to always tell her 'she was the most beautiful woman in the world' and she had 'the most beautiful green eyes.' He repeatedly told her he was so blessed she chose him to love. The love she gave will be cherished forever.
Evelyn is now reunited with her parents, her brother Louie, and her sister Ada and brother-in-law Ralph.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the entire staff at Hillview Convalescent Home for her final care. Deep appreciation to the The Bridge Hospice, Nurse Maria and Nurse Herman.
