Obituary

Evelyn C. Bautista (nee Malinao) was born in Gilroy, CA on January 27, 1932 to Marcial and Victoria Malinao. Brought into this world by Mrs. C. Silva, midwife. The youngest of Marcial's two daughters, she grew up a tomboy. She drove a cultivator-tractor at 10 and had a legal permit to drive at 14. She attended Gilroy schools. At Gilroy High School she was the 1948 "Las Animas" Yearbook Editor, Miss Miriam Coleman, advisor, during her Junior year. She graduated with the Class of 1949. At San Jose State College (BA, 1953), she was one of few women to graduate with a degree in Marketing. She was on the staff of SJSC "LaTorre" (yearbook) and worked as an aide to Dr. M. Wright, Dean of Business Department. In 1953, prior to graduation, she was hired by the Emporium, San Francisco. Evelyn was the first Asian female hired into the Emporium Management Training Program. She spent six years in management and buying.
She married hometown beau, John R. "Cookie" Bautista, in 1955. During her six years as a stay-at-home mom after the birth of son, John III (Johno) in 1959, she re-enrolled at San Jose State College to start a Masters Degree and completed a secondary teaching credential.
Evelyn's second career was in education as a high school teacher at San Jose's Mt. Pleasant High School where she taught for 26 years. She wrote a Distributive Education Program, funded by the Federal Government, that was implemented throughout the entire East Side Union High School District. She served as Chairman of Mt. Pleasant's Business Department for a number of years. She and her fellow teachers started the first Mt. Pleasant Hall of Fame in 1991. She was also appointed as a State of California Business Education Consultant.
After completing her MA in 1971, she taught summer school classes at San Jose State University for a couple of summers. She then became part of the Extended Day Staff at Gavilan College for 10 years. In 1992 she retired from teaching at Mt. Pleasant High School. From 1999-2003 she taught at the Morgan Hill Community Adult School.
In 2003, twenty years after they graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School, two of her students blessed her with the singular honor of naming the Mt. Pleasant "Evelyn Bautista Full Circle Scholarship" in her honor. It has been awarded annually on Honors Night since 2003.
San Francisco was John and Evelyn's first home. They also lived in San Jose where they bought their first home. In 1970 they built their long-planned home in Morgan Hill.
At different times in her life, she was a member of Villa Montalvo Service Group (Saratoga), Ming Quong Service Group (Los Gatos), Morgan Hill Planning Commission, ran for Morgan Hill City Council (lost by 31 votes), Bear Valley Music Festival Board of Directors, Bear Valley Residents Board, Gilroy Garlic Festival Recipe Contest (in 1986, thanks to Don Christopher, she was able to bring the Recipe Contest from the cooking labs at Gilroy High School to the Festival site at Christmas Hill Park) and served on the Garlic Festival Advisory Board.
Snowskiing and waterskiing became a great part of their lives. Chasing snow ski races because of their son racing for Bear Valley Race Team and in the Far West Assn. Junior Racing Program, became a way of life for ten years. Holidays were spent at the cabin or the Bear Valley condo and skiing or on ski trips. Summers were spent on the lakes waterskiing.
With retirement came an Amtrak trip around the USA with days/week-long layovers. It was followed the next year with a Eurorail trip around Europe with days/week-long layovers.
Evelyn was blessed to have lived long enough to see her son, Johno, and grandchildren, Alanna, Kaileigh and John IV, grow into caring, loving, accomplished persons. She loved, adored and doted on them. She was also blessed to have her awesome daughter-in-law, Demise, in her life.
Her life was full and she shared that life of snow skiing, Blue Lake Springs, Bear Valley, the Ridge Tahoe, travel, musicals, 49'ers, community service, teaching and "our kids" with John during their 48 short years together.
Evelyn was predeceased by her only love, John "Cookie;" her parents, her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her beloved son, Johno; beloved daughter-in-law, Denise; adored and loved grandkids, Alanna, Kaileigh and John IV. Also, many relatives and friends.

A private ceremony has been held with her beloved family in attendance.
