Eric Simpson Still, fiercely proud Scotsman, devoted and beloved husband and father, favorite brother and uncle, and absolutely adored grandfather, died on May 19, 2015. He was 79.
Eric was orphaned at 6 years of age when the war in Europe left Edinburgh ravaged. Despite this devastating beginning to his life, he earned a scholarship to the prestigious George Herriot School, where he remained until joining the British Army and served his count~ in the U.K. and East Africa. On his way to Australia in 1962, where he planned to seek his fortune, he stopped to visit California, and never left. After meeting his wife, the two began an antique importing business, and grew it into one of the most successful interior design showrooms in the residential and hospitality industry. Second only to his wife, golf was Eric's passion. When he wasn't playing golf, he was watching golf. When he wasn't watching golf, he was teaching golf to his grandsons - two "gifts" for which he thanked his daughter regularly. And in those rare moments that didn't include a club and a ball, he was a fantastic cook, grew beautiful tomatoes and spectacular roses, made wonderful model airplanes (always British), and pontificated on the brilliant inventions that the Scots contributed to modem civilization. Eric was kind and gentle, a man of honor, commitment and compassion. We will miss his tremendous smile, his warm hugs and his enthusiasm for all that life had to offer. His life was a gift to his family. And now his parents are so very lucky to finally have him back.
A celebration of his life, for close friends and family, was held on May 31st at the Eagle Ridge Golf Community Clubhouse in Gilroy.
The family has suggested that contributions be made to Alzheimer's.
