IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David C.
Walters
June 19, 1963 – December 10, 2018
It is with great sadness that the family of David C. Walters announce his passing on Monday, December 10th, at the age of 55, with beloved wife Lola at his side. She was the love of his life, his loving companion, trusted confidant, best friend and protector. Dave succumbed to an aggressive form of colon cancer that took him in the prime of his life.
While battling cancer, Dave gained strength from Lola's amazingly warm, caring family, all of whom lived nearby and loved him dearly. Dave will be greatly missed by his stepchildren: Cynthia, Fernando, Cristina, Justin, Alex, and Mia; step-grandchildren: Dominic, Jenna, Roman and Gianna, who affectionately called Dave, "Papa Dave;" sisters-in-law: Lucinda, Lisa and Laura; brothers-in-law: Porfirio, Frankie and Jon; Parents-in-law: Porfirio & Lupe Rodriquez; Dave's former spouse and good friend, Sheila Cargo; and his beloved Lil Shitzu, "Vino".
Dave was born in Evanston, IL, to Phil and Sondra Walters, both now deceased. Although Dave has spent most of his life since graduating from college on the West Coast, he will be greatly missed by his Chicago area family members: sisters Theresa, Kimberly and Sharri; Brother-in-law: Kevin; Nieces: Nicole and Ashley; Nephews: Patrick and Great Nephew Gage.
Educated in the Midwest, Dave earned a Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, in Law Enforcement Administration & Political Science from Western Illinois University. Later, he earned a master's degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University. As Dave's career progressed, he became an accomplished, published academic author, and speaker on Security Management, and a mentor to many young security professionals. Dave also co-authored a few textbooks on Security Management.
Dave's successful career involved several multinational corporations, but none could top his professional contributions at Cisco Systems in Silicon Valley. A 20-year valued employee of Cisco, Dave served as the Corporation's Senior Director, of Global Safety, Security & Business Resiliency. His knowledge, energy and dedication to the job will be his legacy.
An icon within the corporate security space, Dave's career started immediately out of college with a move to the West Coast, as the first security intern for General Dynamics Space System in San Diego. Dave's first boss, longtime friend and mentor, Ron Davis, recalls that Dave was a highly motivated, aggressive student and consummate professional who excelled at every job he was assigned. Dave's career was one of consistent excellence and ever-increasing responsibilities. He is remembered and respected by friends and colleagues around the world for his sense of humor, loyalty and willingness to help others, whenever needed.
Whether for business or leisure, Dave developed a love of global travel with 30-plus countries recorded in his passport. His penchant for physical fitness led to a Shotakan karate black belt. Additionally, his love of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, often found he and his beautiful wife Lola, on the road. Before his dad's passing, Dave always looked forward to their annual fishing trips on the vast waters of the Chippewa Flowage in Northern Wisconsin.
Dave's age and excellent physical fitness left family and friends unprepared and devastated to learn of his sudden illness, discovered in February 2016. Dave was a warrior and, while facing imminent death, never let it break his spirit. It is with great pride that his family and friends will remember his bravery, poise and upbeat consideration of those around him and having the strength to face death with the dignity Dave displayed on a daily basis.
A celebration of life will be held privately.
