David Chantler, born and raised in Gilroy, California, passed away suddenly on February 19, 2026, at the age of 71. His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Growing up in Gilroy, David made friendships in kindergarten that lasted his entire life. He stayed close to the friends he grew up with, sharing decades of memories, laughter, and unwavering connections.
David spent 30 years in the building industry, including 19 years with the City of Gilroy, and later worked with a private consulting firm, where he was respected for his knowledge, steady work ethic, and integrity.
His love of the outdoors began early during summer long Chantler family gatherings at Mt. Madonna with his grandfather, uncles, and cousins. Those trips sparked a lifelong passion for camping and fishing.
He loved fishing in every form, whether ocean fishing for salmon and rockfish, crabbing, casting for steelhead in the river, or heading to the lake for trout. Like any good fisherman, the stories seemed to get better, and the fish got bigger by the end of the day, especially when he was swapping them with his buddies. He was happiest when there was water nearby, especially houseboating on Lake Shasta with family and friends.
Above all else, David’s most treasured role was that of husband to his beloved wife, Patty. Married for over 40 years, they were true soulmates and best friends who shared a deep and abiding love. Their life together was built on partnership, laughter, adventure and devotion. Whether traveling the open road, exploring distant countries, or enjoying a quiet moment at home, they found joy simply in being together.
Together, they traveled to almost all 50 states and throughout most of Canada, exploring the beauty of the continent side by side. David especially loved visiting the National Parks and proudly experienced most of them. His love of travel extended beyond North America. David enjoyed many trips overseas to visit family and friends, from Europe to Australia. These journeys reflected his appreciation for connection, culture, and good food.
David also loved animals, especially his “girlies,” Shiloh and Lucy, who brought him constant companionship and unconditional love.
David was preceded in death by his parents, David Chantler and Hedy Emlen.
He is survived by his brother, Dennis Chantler; his brothers-in-law, Gary Keef and Bob Keef; and his nieces and nephews, Monic Ramirez, Trisha Guerrero, Nicole Keef, Davey Keef, Brian Keef, and William Keef. Known lovingly as “Uncle D,” he always made time for them, creating adventures camping and houseboating that they will cherish forever.
David will be remembered for his steadfast love, deep loyalty, and generous spirit. His legacy lives on in the friendships he nurtured, the family memories he created, and the miles traveled in pursuit of togetherness and wonder.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
