IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Chuck
Wear
July 21, 1948 – January 14, 2017
Chuck Wear was born on July 21, 1948 to Fred and Margy Wear in Modesto, California. Chuck was the second born in a family of seven children. He often spoke of the very close bond he shared with his brother Bob and the special language they'd developed together. Chuck also enjoyed a very strong relationship with his grandparents. He especially loved visiting his maternal grandparents' cabin in Pinecrest. Chuck's family moved to Gilroy during his Sophomore year in high school where he excelled in track and field and then, in his senior year, he wowed the crowd as a varsity cheerleader! He broke records as a football star for Gavilan College before being drafted and sent to Vietnam where he was Ranger with the 173rd Airborne Infantry. He hated combat warfare, but was proud to serve his country and received commendations for his contributions. His oldest son Brian was born while he was still in Vietnam and six years later his second son, Brendon, was born. Chuck loved being a father; his boys were foremost in his thoughts and actions. Introducing them to the outdoors and the natural world he loved, was his joy. After returning from Army service, he went back to Gavilan College and began his apprenticeship in the construction trade. In 1975, he started his own construction company, Wear Construction. A highlight of this time was his purchase of a Gemini blue (the salesman said it matched his eyes) Porshe 911 Targa. Chuck had a deep appreciation for fast and fine automobiles!
His life changed dramatically in June of 1986 when he experienced a ATV accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Though incredibly hard, he would refer to the accident as an answer to a prayer because, while he was rehabilitating, he was introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was baptized as soon as he could be! After getting out of the hospitals and going through vigorous rehabilitation, he moved back to Gilroy to start this new phase of his life. Here, he met his eternal companion, Judy. They married in August of 1989. They shared a passion for travel, visiting many countries and special places together. They also shared a great passion for sports. Recently, they loved watching Warriors' games together. Grandchildren brought great joy to him; he adored spending time with all of them… and hosting visits whenever possible. They all will remember the things he taught them, and how special he made them feel.
Everyone who was privileged to know Chuck, was uplifted by his positive outlook, strength, and optimism. He never complained, and helped others where ever he went. His example is his legacy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred, his sister, Joan, and his brother, Greg.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; his sons, Brian (Santa) and Brendon; his step-daughter, Heather Hinds (Samuel); his 6 grandchildren, Jade, B, Christian, Brittany, Michael, and Christopher; his siblings, Bob (Marilyn), Mary (Hugh), David (Silvia), and Therese; many nieces and nephews as well as many loving friends.
