Al Tounger, 94, of Los Gatos, passed away at home on November 3rd, 2019. He is survived by Sue, his loving wife of 65 years; his children, Sheri Willson of Tulsa, OK, Julie Wiser of Carrollton, TX, and Alexander Tounger of Oakton, VA; and 8 grandchildren.
Al was raised in Fresno, CA by Greek immigrant parents, Olympia and Alexander Tounger. He attended Fresno State University where he graduated with a degree in Biology. He went on to earn a Master's Degree in Education at San Francisco State.
Al met the love of his life, Sue, while at Ft. Bragg, where he was serving as a paratrooper. Sue had a summer job on the base as a recreation director. After dating for 2 weeks, Al proposed and he barely got the question out before Sue responded with a resounding yes and 4 months later they were married. After Al finished his time in the Army, he and Sue moved to the California Bay Area and they began their family and Al began his teaching career. As a teacher, he impacted the lives of hundreds of children where he taught at Benner Jr. High in Sunnyvale, and Cumberland Elementary in Cupertino. He took early retirement at age 55.
After retirement, Al pursued several business ventures and traveled around the world with his family. Al was by nature an adventurer. Sue would best be described as a trooper who fully encouraged Al to pursue his dreams, and though not the initiator, she very much entered in and greatly enjoyed their interesting lifestyle. Al and Sue made many new friends everywhere they went. For example, they once met a young man on a train in China. Several months later, after having returned to the US, they were back in China attending his wedding! To this day, Al and Sue continue to keep in touch with several of the friends they made during their travels.
Al's passions were God, family, friends, country and travel. He was able to weave all those passions together. Al left his footprints all over the world. But they weren't just physical. He left footprints of love, kindness, humor, generosity, joy and faith. Even though Al is no longer with us, we can look back and clearly see the trail he left behind.
That trail inspires us to do more, love harder, see hope in all situations, and trust God with our future.
Al's hope was with the God of the Bible. He is now in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom he followed with a passion.
